I was so touched by Charity’s story. I am a fellow rescuer and work with Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue. We just rescued a little dog whose front right leg was broken up by the shoulder and was not treated. The little dog is getting along pretty well on the three legs and your video really helps me realize how these little guys can adjust to almost any situation! We are hoping that Alamo’s leg can be realigned with surgery. It will probably require bone graphs since the injury is about 6 months old now. I also have a very arthritic Shih Tzu that we rescued a few years ago and I fostered. I eventually adopted Buddy. He was only about 4 years old when we rescued him and found out he has severe arthritis in his rear legs. We know that he may someday need the use of a wheelchair for his back legs. Seeing little Charity use her wheelchair gives me hope that Little Buddy will be able to adjust to his when the day comes that he will need one, too. Thanks for the great save with Charity. She is truly amazing!

How encouraging, your video of little Charity in her wheelchair. I live in New Mexico. I have a little Chihuahua named Sumo. He was attacked by a Rotweiler and thankfully lived, but it left him with a spinal cord injury. He is still able to potty on comand, but he is not able to use his back legs. I have not had the heart to put him down, because of my son. I am a single mother of the most wonderful boy, who happens to have autism. My sons world revolves around our dog, Sumo. But at the same time, it has been sooo hard on me seeing Sumo drag his back legs all over the place. Please, tell me how I can get one of those wonderful wheelchairs for my Sumo. Also, are they very expensive? Cause I am on a very fixed income. Would they take payments?

Thanks again,
Marlene

I saw Charity’s video on youtube and it brought me back here.

Wow, I’m so glad she found a good home! thankyou for doing this, I wish more people were like you!

I own two chihuahuas myself and they are such a joy, they are inteligent and surprising, looks like Charity is just the same.

Rescuing dogs -or any animal for that matter, can be very rewarding, I once picked up a pair of cute little female dogs I found in a dumpster, found parents for both of them; and is so great to hear how beautiful they turned out to be and how happy they are to have them. Is a great feeling, I wish more people would do that.

anyway, congratulations for little Charity and for the great work you do!

I have a chihuahua that needs a wheelchair due to laxated patella in both hind little legs. her name is Joy and she is only 4 lbs. Where can I get her a wheelchair the same kind you’ve got for Charity. Please help

I am also wondering the same as wandaherman. I have a 3 pound chihuahua that has no use of his hind legs due to luxating patellas. He had surgery, but for some reason he got worse and never recovered. I would love to know where to get a small wheelchair like this one.
Thank you.

I’m SO glad you didn’t listen to those first vets and put Charity down! I have a Rat Terrier that I adopted that is handicapped. 10 months after his accident his family decided they needed to find him a new home or put him to sleep. I’ve always wanted to adopt a handicapped dog – in addition to the other dogs I have – and was on PetFinder.com one night and saw him by chance. There was just something about those eyes in his pictures. I knew I couldn’t leave him. I drove to New Jersey from North Carolina to get him. He did 6 months of underwater treadmill therapy twice a week for 30 to 45 minutes at a time. I got him some wheels too – but he doesn’t use them much anymore. If he does use them, it is outside. He gets them caught on too much stuff in the house. We replaced all of our carpets with laminate flooring since we have so many dogs, and put rugs all thru the house for him so the floors aren’t hard and so he doesn’t slip around. We built quite the get-up on the back of our house with thick outdoor carpets so he can go outside without me being there 24/7 and so he can be outside with the other dogs. We try to do as much as possible so he feels like a “normal” dog. He is such a sweetheart. He has been thru so much, and yet still loves with all his heart. The amazing part is – all of the other dogs don’t see his handicap. He’s just “one of the boys” to them. We have a 7 month old daughter now, and that makes things a little trickier, but we’re determined to make sure all of the dogs still get their lovins and attention! lol I think people have issues with their dogs after babies come because they flat out ignore them. Obviously, things aren’t going to be the same. But dogs are quite adaptable, and as long as you don’t totally emotionally abandon them, they will be fine! Our daughter LOVES our dogs. She gets a huge kick out of them – and they love her too! There are days when I look at Buddy (our handicapped dog) and wonder how in the world anyone could have just put him to sleep because he had a simple handicap. He’s so happy, and full of life and energy, and so loving. What a loss it would have been! So KUDOS to you for not giving up on Charity! She’s a sweetheart! That video of her in her wheels made my day! It made me smile and giggle and cry all at the same time!

OH! And I am sure you know about it, but http://www.HandicappedPets.com is a GREAT resource for handicapped pets! Lots of info, tons of great products!!!
